CROMWELL ST.

I had finished reading my third book, Hour Game by David Baldacci that is all about a serial killer who had killed because he wants to revenge for his twin’s misfortune. It was an exciting thrill of events and that made me want to read and discover more such stories.

And as I was watching the Discovery channel one Saturday night that was entitled “inside: crimes that shook the world”. It was about that Cromwell St. and that was so nerve-wracking. It was so heinous that it made me interested on discovering full details about it. As I typed the text “Cromwell St.” on the search engine, on a second the search was up.

1973 was a year for the Wests to celebrate. They walked away from Caroline Owens' rape and abduction charge with only a fine and they murdered Lynda Gough with no police repercussions at all. Then in August, their first son, Stephen, was born.

Emboldened by their success, they abducted fifteen-year-old Carol Ann Cooper in November and amused themselves with her sexually -- that is, until she outlived her entertainment value and was snuffed out by strangulation or suffocation, dismembered and buried. She joined the growing city of the dead at 25 Cromwell Street.

Industrious Fred, persistent in his home improvements, had enlarged the cellar and was demolishing the garage to build an extension to the main house. No matter that these improvements were done at very strange hours.

A little over a month later, university student Lucy Partington had gone home to her mother's house to spend the Christmas holiday. On December 27, she went to visit her disabled friend and left to catch a bus shortly after 10 P.M. She had the misfortune to meet up with Fred and Rose, who probably knocked her out and abducted her. Like Carol Ann Cooper, she was tortured for approximately a week and then murdered, dismembered and buried in Fred's construction projects. He cut himself while dismembering Lucy and had to go to the hospital for stitches on January 3, 1974. Lucy, like Carol Ann Cooper, was reported missing, but there was nothing to tie the two girls to the Wests. read more

STIGMATA: false or real?

Stigmata are wounds or skin blotches which match the wounds suffered by Jesus during his trial and crucifixion. Some people believe that they can appear spontaneously through a miraculous act of God. But the evidence often points to natural causes, such as self-wounding or unusual medical conditions.

Some stigmata have unusual shapes, such as a cross or a circle, and a few even glow in the dark. Many of them also produce a pleasant perfume-like odor. In a few rare cases they aren't even visible, but are known to be present from the pain that they cause.

Because stigmata are counterparts to the wounds suffered by Christ, they are normally found on the hands and feet, on one side of the chest, and on the head, shoulders, and back. But they are not always real wounds, for many of them occur in the form of purplish skin blotches or tattoo-like markings. However, in a few cases, what looks like a blotch may actually be a real wound, because small amounts of blood will sometimes seep from it, even though no breaks are visible in the skin.

The word "stigmata" is the plural of the Greek word "stigma". This was an ancient name for marks that were pricked or branded onto the bodies of slaves and soldiers for identification purposes. The word was also applied to religious symbols tattooed onto members of pagan cults to show their devotion to particular gods and goddesses.

The first known use of the word with regard to the wounds of Christ occurs in Galatians 6:17, where the Apostle Paul says "I bear on my body the marks of Jesus." Biblical scholars aren't sure what kind of marks Paul was referring to. Possibly they were the result of wounds he'd received from scourgings and stonings by people who opposed his teaching. But another possibility is that he intentionally inflicted wounds on himself in an attempt to experience the same pain that Jesus felt.

Attempts to re-experience the suffering of Jesus definitely took place during the Middle Ages. Writings from that period contain many reports of mystics deliberately wounding themselves for such a purpose.

After self-wounding became common, people began to hear stories about wounds that appeared spontaneously. The most prominent case involved Saint Francis of Assisi, who died in 1226. It was said that his stigmata became present two years before his death, and that his hands actually appeared to have nails in them.

After Saint Francis died, other reports of spontaneous stigmata began to appear, and have continued to do so ever since. Near the end of the nineteenth century, an investigation by Dr. Antoine Imbert-Gourbeyre (1818-1912) identified hundreds of cases that had occurred up to that time. And the rate of occurrence seemed to increase during the twentieth century.

The best-known stigmatics of modern times include Padre Pio, Therese Neumann, Heather Woods, and Lilian Bernas, but there have been many others. In some modern cases, people have reported that they went into a trance in which they seemed to be nailed to a cross, and when they awoke they found the wounds or markings on their bodies.

Modern investigations indicate that stigmata can persist for different time periods, from a few hours to many years. They often appear suddenly, remain for a few days, then quickly fade away. In a few cases they have appeared on Good Friday and vanished on Easter morning.

Many Christians believe that the sudden appearance of stigmata is a supernatural sign that a person is very close to God. According to some reports, the miraculous nature of the wounds is verified by the fact that they don't respond to medical treatment, but can suddenly heal without treatment and without leaving any scars.

Some stigmatics say that they gladly suffer from the pain because their sacrifice helps pay for the sins of other people.

Stigmata are sometimes accompanied by other unusual phenomena such as powers of prophecy and the ability to live with very little food or water. St. Catherine of Siena (1347-1381) reportedly went without water for an entire month while her wounds were present. And Angela of Foligno (1250-1309) didn't eat anything for twelve years except for what was offered at the Eucharist. Other associated phenomena include visions, trance-like states, and tears of blood.

Many people doubt the claims about supernatural or miraculous causes for stigmata. One reason for this is that none of the reported miraculous occurrences has ever been documented by strict scientific methods. In addition, there may be natural explanations for all of the reported phenomena. Here are several possible explanations:

--- A person could inflict wounds on himself while in a state of religious ecstasy and not remember doing it afterward. Failure to remember a self-infliction could also occur if an alternate personality temporarily took control of a person's body and created the stigmata.

--- Another possibility is that intense prayer or deep meditation could bring about a psychosomatic reaction that causes the wounds or marks to appear. This process, sometimes called "psychogenic purpura", has been investigated medically, and there is some evidence that it can actually occur.

--- Some people have secretly wounded themselves in an attempt to get attention or look pious. One well-known example was Magdalena de la Cruz (1487–1560), who eventually admitted that her wounds were a hoax. In a modern case, carbolic acid was reportedly applied to the skin to create blister-like wounds. Another way to create fake stigmata is to paint them onto the skin, and several people have apparently used this method. The use of painted-on markings could explain cases in which the stigmata have unusual shapes, or glow in the dark, or appear to heal without leaving any scars.

Another reason for suspicion arises from questions about the locations of stigmata on a person's body. For example, many scholars doubt that Jesus even had any wounds on his hands. Available evidence indicates that the flesh of the hands isn't firm enough to hold a body on a cross, and that the nails were normally driven through the wrists instead.

Stigmata occasionally appear on individuals who aren't considered to be pious. One common explanation for such cases is that they are the work of the Devil.

MAY is starting tomorrow

Oh… it’s already the end of the month. I haven’t noticed time pass by. It was like it was just yesterday when my niece and I arrived here and it was still fresh to me that I waved “see you again” to Ngit. I didn’t feel the time yet I still miss someone. J Tomorrow, May is starting and I know it would be fast. I would surely miss my mother and my tito. I would miss the food that my mom prepares for us. I would miss the shopping and the grocery sessions. I would miss the car. And most of all, I would miss their company. J Too bad I also miss the people left in Davao. L Well, it would not be a goodbye for them but instead it would be a ‘see you again, I’ll miss you’.

paul mcmann

Paul McMann. Who is he? I have come to encounter his name through a management class where my professor had set him as an example, an example where my classmates and I would never forget. He was a model for us youth, finding a way to link his interest to his business brain. It just shows that we may be business minded and at the same time really enjoy what we’re doing.

Paul McMann is one of the best hands in the field of real estate. Not only that, he had crossed boundaries from being on the circle of financial sales representative to being a competitive college professor to being the boss of his own real estate company. He certainly is a man with talent and intelligence. He used his knowledge on to following and satisfying himself of his interest. He had lots of achievements including his being named as an affiliate with Blue Coast Financial Group. He would be the company’s financial advisor and at the same time Babson College’s financial and management accounting professor. He had also written articles that may help management students do their jobs proficiently.

Paul McMann is indeed a man endowed with brilliance because he was able to use his financial and scholastic expertise on to uniting his devotion for his all-time affection for the sport—basketball. He is undeniably a visionary in helping the fanatical basketball players fulfill their dreams. And years ago he founded and established a basketball league that encourages youths to believe in their dreams and fulfill it to their best. He used his skills and expertise in sales to let the players have an education and their respective allowances. He is a well known reputable man and without a doubt an intellectual individual that currently resides at Massachusetts and still writes for publications that he had earned credit for.

Max's Resto

It was Friday afternoon when we decided to go bar hopping or somewhat find a place to stay away from home. We don’t wanna spend the night doing nothing at home because we have done it the whole week. We had dinner at Max’s Restaurant. It was a plateful of fried chicken, bitter gourd with beef and the so delicious kare-kare. It was years ago when I last tasted that scrumptious fried chicken because there was no Max’s Restaurant in Davao. It had Max’s but it was years ago when it closed. It was the first and the last time I ate at Max’s Davao. Good thing I had the opportunity to eat at Max’s once more. After the mouth-watering and stomach filling dinner we headed out way to Music Box comedy bar. There were gay men performers who excellently performed in front of the crowd. They had beautiful singing voice and they were so accommodating inviting us to sing on stage. Of course, I refused to do so because I was reticent. They were so amazingly funny that even my niece Kyla refused to go even though she’s sleepy. She had fun with that gay performer named chat cause she looked like Dora the Explorer that person who really performed at Dora Live. We laughed our hearts out and enjoyed the night. We took pictures and I am gonna post it as soon as we transferred the pictures from the Digicam to the computer. J

HAPPY earthDAY!

We’re celebrating Earth Day today—April 22! Maybe time for us to reflect on the sins we’ve caused abuse to mother earth. I know there are still people concerned. They still think of our environment’s condition (thank God!).

I have an this article on the Philippine Star yesterday which talked about “Green Death” I mean, things considered for a burial is made up of environment-friendly materials like cardboard as a coffin and clothes made up of plant fibers. They also don’t use formaldehyde to embalm the dead body instead, the use of refrigeration or dry ice is considered for the process. Weird? Yes, kind of. But it just shows that people may think of a better way than to stick on to the convention. Oh, I forgot to tell you that before using the coffin made up of cardboard, you should first consider the place of burial; I mean the soil where you are planning to bury the dead because obviously it’s not pleasant to see the coffin with a dead body collapse because it’s wet. Right? And if you’re thinking of the budget, like the usual burial, there are funeral parlors which are of high prices and also there are still which has reasonable prices.

I just hope those innovations would also be here in the Philippines cause it’s still at London. J Happy MOURNING! :-p

SICK REALISM

High crime rate and devastating poverty are some examples of third world nation. These two factors have intense effect the nation’s progress, not only in its reputation but also in economic status. High crime rate is cause by hunger or in other words “POVERTY”. And poverty is the effect of corruption done by individuals who seated in the throne of wealth. Taxes from masses have been used for personal longings. Projects that supposedly serve the citizen have been deprived from them. As a result; nationwide basic commodity price hike, nationwide hunger, street terrorism and violence.

communication through mobile

Philippines is considered and known to be as the texting capital of the world. From the richest class of the economy up to the lowest paid employee, having a mobile phone is a must. People use it as obviously a form of communication, to meet people, to congregate new folks. People tend to prioritize having this ‘load’ than to buy needs like food, just for the sake of having something to let them communicate with people whom they are attached to or people who they haven’t met for even once in their entire life—strangers.

Filipinos are known to be friendly, but does it really justify the fact that they are starving yet consider and prioritize having load instead of the food? Does it really help having a friend out of nowhere? Maybe for some I guess. Well, all I know is mobile phone made communication easier, to meet new friends, new loved-ones, new enemies and what’s new? …those old exes.

STONY WEATHER

Its sixteen hundred hours when I woke up, twenty minutes to go before four twenty. The weather is amazingly cold, small droplets of rain wet the scorching land. So, I prepared myself, start the radio and play some of my favorite music. A song entitled “Chop Em Down” by Matisyahu was first in my hits. It is a Jewish reggae song all about biblical happenings in the bible. From Joseph’s story up to his grandson Mosses who split the ocean in t half. Then, I lit some sliff to stimulate my mind and get my eyes bloodyshot. Few minutes later, I found myself eating a plateful of rice, a piece of fried fish and a bowl of stewed vegetables.

SNAKEY fridae

It was a day which started without light. I mean, it was a day that started without electricity. I don’t know the reason why the light went out but I am sure it was out for few minutes and so, we weren’t able to start the day early.

The day was planned days ago…to go and visit Manila Zoo. Visiting that zoo was not new to me. A few years ago, I was there, mingling with the animals, yet, that time, the place wasn’t good enough, it was not yet that developed. And I haven’t got enough courage to take a picture with the snake. Hmm…I am not really afraid then. It was just a strange feeling of mine looking the snakes crawl. I thought it would be fearful to carry the snake and let them crawl to your body. I was wrong. Their skins were like of that leather bags my mom have, creeping on my skin. Thanks to my niece Kyla, I had the guts to touch it. I was shocked because she cried when she saw the elephant and the horse, maybe because of their huge sizes but we didn’t hear her say anything about the snake. Thank goodness it was an albino snake, her favorite color—yellow that made her brave enough to touch the snake. At the end of the picture taking session, I was so happy that at last, I had conquered my fears. J After the long exploration on that zoological garden, we headed our way to Malabon to eat the original Pancit Malabon. It was a meal that made us full, a yummy pancit which I missed eating for how many years. After filling our stomach, we had another session of picture taking outside the PBB house in Quezon City. Again, it wasn’t my first time to visit their, yet my first time to pose for a picture outside that yellow house.

The trip was awesome, tiring yet exciting. Of course, traffic was the one who ate our time. Nevertheless, the whole day was spent with worth, worthy to be remembered and treasured.

the newly opened Ocean Park

Hmft… last week, I had the chance to visit ocean park. It was an experience that I would surely love to remember. The close encounter with the sharks and different marine species greeted me during my visit there. Unluckily, I didn’t have the chance to take pictures during my stay; thank God I had my video cam to document my tour around that Oceanarium. I was with my niece, Tito and mother when I had my trip their. I may say the entrance fee was not worth it for the place. I am not discouraging the people who are excited to go there. But I am not really satisfied with the length of the tunnel because I was expecting a longer tunnel than what I have seen. If I would to rate it between 1 to 10 (1 being the lowest and 10 the highest) I may say it would be a 7 because although it has a shorter tunnel than that of what I expected, yet I was amazed by (I think) hundreds of marine species that I didn’t know that it ever existed. Truly, the species were great and I am encouraging you to come and visit the newly opened Ocean Park.

how to let an impulsive buyer save

I don’t usually save when I have money because if you may know I am an impulsive buyer. When I have my allowance I spend and spend then I’ll realize that I don’t have sufficient money for my weekly spending. It was a disaster having no money for days yet, months came and still I didn’t learn how to bank until I have accidentally browsed unto cyber monday that has immense listings of products that you may avail to them at a lower cost because of their discounts on a bunch of artifact. Surely they are a great help to impetuous shoppers who wants to save yet can’t help it but spend.

Oh! Did I mention that I had availed of their discounted offers during Christmas season where I shopped for gifts? Cyber Monday is a Monday after Thanksgiving Day, named Cyber Monday because as you can scrutinize, it is available on a Monday and at the same time availed through the Cyber Space.

Cyber Monday is really a big help to people like me save because as we all know money is not simply earned even though I just receive my allowance from my parents still I know the value of money, yet, as I have said I know but I can’t really help it! I spend and spend and at the end wonder where my money was spent. It was awful when that moment comes. But, when I have discovered about Cyber Monday I was lightened up by their offers, they also have me buzzed when there are new offers making it sure that everybody has awareness on what’s new and what’s up for them. They do not make people be conscious they also make them thrifty and has the concern for them to avail of good and of high quality products.

How to Eat Without Gaining Weight

The following suggestions will help you to eat well without putting on those pounds:

What to eat?

  • Eat at least five servings of fresh fruits a day. Fresh fruits does not lead to obesity, as some people erroneously believe. To contrary, in addition to having a very low energy density (few calories in a lot of weight), it provides vitamins and fiber that inhibit obesity.

  • Eat a plate of fresh vegetables salad each day.

  • Reduce or eliminate the typical fast foods: hamburgers, hotdogs and other sausages, snacks, sauces, pastries and sweets.

  • Drink enough water each day so that your urine is clear, colorless and odorless. It’s been shown that a high intake of water and low intake of salt is simple way to avoid gaining weight.

car deals

Money today isn’t earned easily and so, buying a new car might be expensive especially for someone who does not earn much. But there is another option for people who have lesser take-home pay yet really find buying a car a need—to buy used cars.

I found a site that offers great deals on used cars ; they had a wide range of listings of different car models, colors and of course, price range affordable enough for people without sacrificing the product’s quality. Their site is well-developed making it sure that their clients get to visit and deal with their site securely without being scammed. They also are able to format their site into a user-friendly one for clients to keep coming in. Also, if you are still undecided on what car model you want to choose, they designed a menu on their page to help people choose the car that best suits them. Giving the clients advises on how to choose a car with the best quality; they also provide tips on the do’s and don’ts of choosing automobiles.

Well, being practical is needed nowadays so better have the best offer without giving up the eminence. Visit them now and have a deal! Happy shopping!

DREAMCATCHER

Dreamcatcher is constructed by tying sinew strands in a web around a small round or tear-shaped frame of willow (in a way roughly similar to their method for making snowshoe webbing). The resulting "dream-catcher", hung above the bed, is then used as a charm to protect sleeping children from nightmares. Dreamcatchers made of willow and sinew are not meant to last forever but instead are intended to dry out and collapse over time as the child enters the age of adulthood. Sunny Days and Rainy Nights

Temperature is amazingly scorching us during daytime and freezing us up during the nighttime. It’s all about Global Warming. According to www.wikipedia.org, Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-twentieth century and its projected continuation. Increasing global temperature will cause sea level to rise, and is expected to increase the intensity of extreme weather events and to change the amount and pattern of precipitation. Other effects of global warming include changes in agricultural yields, trade routes, glacier retreat, species extinctions and increases in the ranges of disease vectors.
